A Summer Day in Maryland
Nathan Zuehlke
When cicada trills cascade in July heat
warm breaths of air across a suntanned face
brilliant gold streams through windowsills
upon waking. A new day. A new adventure.
Sitting under the swaying oaks. Cool canopies
stretch, massive umbrellas blocking the sizzling sun
a book in hand, reading journeys—adventures of mice and rats.
Days hold warmth and promise.
Crystal blue skies turn into an onyx canvas.
Calm becomes a soaking deluge,
accompanied by a purple and white neon show.
A new and fresh day.
Where once was dry, cicada trills cascade in July heat
warm breaths of air across wet petals
sparkling gold floods oaks and maples.
All of life. Springs forth.
